Lyn 180

Lyn R. Zbinden began his career in automotive design with AM General creating, in 1979, the original ‘HUMMER’, after Renault purchased AM General. Subsequently, Lyn was selected to design for Renault Sport F1 in Viry-Châtillon, Paris, France, where he specialised in aerodynamics. He began his career in glass/ceramics engineering with Saturn Corporation upon his return to the U.S., where he designed the first Saturn windshield and backlite.

He then led General Motors’ glass and glazing efforts, with a multi-national team responsible for the design, engineering, manufacturing, and sourcing of its product portfolio for the next decade. Lyn breaks down complex concepts into “knowledge bites,” in his column in Automotive Design Club International. Lyn R. Zbinden currently consults to the transportation industry, and is an active member of SAE International. He is the author: Glass Engineering: Design Solutions for Automotive Applications, published by the American Society of Automotive Engineers.
